Columnaris Disease: A Bacterial Infection Caused by Flavobacterium columnare
نویسندگان
چکیده
Columnaris disease is the second leading cause of mortality in pond raised catfish in the southeastern United States. It is second only to enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC) caused by the bacterium Edwardsiella ictaluri. Most species of fish are susceptible to columnaris following some type of environmental stress and when water temperatures are in the upper part of their preferred temperature range. The disease commonly occurs in channel catfish when water temperatures are in the range of 25 to 32o C (77 to 90o F) in the spring, summer and fall. Clinical signs or symptoms

Walleye Autochthonous Bacteria as Promising Probiotic Candidates against Flavobacterium columnare
Walleye (Sander vitreus) is the second most fished freshwater species in Canada. While much sought by anglers, walleye also supports substantial commercial fisheries. To cope with the recent decline of wild walleye populations, fish farmers produce juveniles for lake stocking. However, walleye breeding is particularly tedious, mostly due to high disease susceptibility at larval and juvenile dev...
متن کاملThe use of phage FCL-2 as an alternative to chemotherapy against columnaris disease in aquaculture
Flavobacterium columnare, the causative agent of columnaris disease in fish, causes millions of dollars of losses in the US channel catfish industry alone, not to mention aquaculture industry worldwide. Novel methods are needed for the control and treatment of bacterial diseases in aquaculture to replace traditionally used chemotherapies. A potential solution could be the use of phages, i.e., b...
متن کاملComparative Genomics and Transcriptional Analysis of Flavobacterium columnare Strain ATCC 49512
Flavobacterium columnare is a Gram-negative fish pathogen causing columnaris disease in wild and cultured fish species. Although the pathogen is widespread in aquatic environments and fish worldwide, little is known about biology of F. columnare and mechanisms of columnaris disease pathogenesis. Previously we presented the complete genome sequence of F. columnare strain ATCC 49512. Here we pres...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequence of the Fish Pathogen Flavobacterium columnare Strain C#2
Flavobacterium columnare is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen that causes columnaris disease of freshwater fish. Flavobacterium columnare strain C#2 was isolated from a diseased warm-water fish and is typed as genomovar II. The genome consists of a single 3.33-Mb circular chromosome with 2,689 predicted coding genes.
متن کاملNovel treatment methods of columnaris disease
Columnaris disease, caused by Flavobacterium columnare, is an urgent problem in Finnish fish farming. The occurrence of disease outbreaks has increased significantly at fish farms producing salmonid fingerlings in the inland freshwater area. The reasons for this are unclear, but we have previously suggested that the ecological and epidemiological factors of intensive farming, together with clim...
